💡 Xianyu’s most interesting product may no longer be second-hand goods. It’s spare capacity.

Most people know Xianyu (闲鱼) as China’s largest second-hand marketplace.

But something more interesting is happening. 🔄

People are no longer selling only unused phones, furniture or clothes. They are also monetizing time, skills and knowledge, including photography, design, tutoring, pet sitting, interview coaching and software development. 🧑‍💻📷🐾

In 2025, nearly 20 million sellers reportedly offered services on Xianyu, with Gen Z making up a significant share.

What interests me is not simply that Xianyu added a new service category.

It is that the platform is expanding the definition of what an “idle asset” can be.

📦 A phone sitting unused in a drawer is an idle asset. 🧠 So is a designer with three free hours on Saturday.

This changes the economics of the platform.

Traditional marketplaces help products find buyers. Xianyu is increasingly helping individual capacity find demand.

For younger users, that dramatically lowers the barrier to earning independently. There is no need to build a brand, create a website or invest heavily in customer acquisition. A skill can become a small business almost immediately. 🚀

That makes Xianyu increasingly interesting as a form of micro-entrepreneurship infrastructure.

And there is another important implication.

The platform sits at the intersection of several trends happening in China at the same time:

♻️ More rational consumption 💼 Growing interest in side income 🧑‍🎨 More flexible forms of work 📱 Lower barriers to becoming an individual seller or service provider

But as Xianyu moves from products to services, its biggest challenge may also change.

For second-hand goods, the question is usually: Is the product authentic and in good condition?

For services, the question becomes: Can I trust this person’s ability, professionalism and reliability?

That means Xianyu’s next competitive advantage may not come from traffic alone.

It may come from building a better trust system for individual skills and services.

🌱 This is why I think Xianyu is becoming much more than a second-hand marketplace.

It is gradually turning unused goods, unused time and unused skills into economic value.

And perhaps that is the bigger idea:

The next generation of marketplaces may create value not by helping us consume more, but by helping us use what already exists more efficiently.

Sometimes that resource is an unused phone. Sometimes it is your time. ⏳
